The constitution of the Biotechnical Foundation of the Faculty of Food Technology and Biotechnology, University of Zagreb, Croatia, started in 1996. It was during the preparations for celebration of the 40th Anniversary of the first study of biotechnology at the Faculty of Technology in Zagreb, which later developed into the individual Faculty of Food Technology and Biotechnology, that the idea of founding a foundation for the benefits of food technology, biotechnology, nutritionism and environment protection studies, first started among the Faculty staff and representatives from pharmaceutical and food industry. At that time, the Biotechnical Foundation was the first NGO in the Croatian higher-education community.
On November 24, 2016 the first Foundation Manager, Prof. Emer. Zlatko Kniewald, PhD, participated in the talk show called “Social Network” (“Društvena mreža”) at the Croatian Television channel “HTV 1”, where he presented the work of the Foundation in a 15 minute speech.
On November 25, 2016 the Biotechnical Foundation has celebrated 20 years of its activity in the Great Hall of the University of Zagreb. During the Celebration the donators received acknowledgments and the best students received scholarships and supporting donations for the academic year 2016/2017. It was also time for promotion of the new Bulletin of the Biotechnical Foundation with the short history on the previous twenty years 1996-2016 (ISSN 1845-0016).
Welcome speeches were given by Ms. Ana Tecilazić-Goršić, MSc, Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Croatia, Ms. Cvjetana Plavša Matić, Manager of National Foundation for the Civil Society Development, Ms. Nevenka Vrač MSc, CEDEVITA, Ltd., Krešimir Mihaljević, PhD, PLIVA Croatia, Inc., Ms. Tera Cota, Bsc. (Econ.). from the Zagreb Brewery, Ltd., Manager of the Biotechnical Foundation Prof. Višnja Gaurina Srček, PhD, Prof. Emer. Zlatko Kniewald, PhD, first Foundation Manager and Acting Member of Governing Board, who spoke about the history and current activities of the Foundation. They mentioned that the Foundation is funded exclusively through donations from industry and not the Government. There are no permanently employed personnel and activities of all Foundation bodies are on voluntary basis. During the seven years of Croatian recession period, the participation of industry and the activity of the Foundation have not changed at all.
The warm atmosphere during the Celebration was provided by the participation of student String Quartet from the Zagreb Academy of Music.
The laureate of the Foundation Annual Award for the Year 2008, Assoc. Prof. Anet Režek Jambrak, PhD, presented a lecture under the name „Biotechnical Foundation Award and its implication on my further development as a scientist“.
Since it was founded, the Foundation granted 105 scholarships, 68 support donations, 5 awards and 13 annual awards with the total amount of over 1 mil. HRK or more than 150.000 €.
In the past, the Biotechnical Foundation has participated in the funding of several activities organized by the Croatian Academy of Engineering (HATZ).
This support was greatly appreciated by the representatives of HATZ, especially for Scientific Meetings „Vera Johanides Days“, erecting of memorial postament of Prof. Emer. Vera Johanides, PhD in the HATZ House courtyard, “Annual 2013 of the Croatian Academy of Engineering”, “Tehničke znanosti 20(1) 2016” and “Engineering Power 11(2) 2016”. On behalf of the President of Croatian Academy of Engineering Prof. Vladimir Andročec, PhD, who was unable to attend the Celebration personally, Prof. Emer. Zlatko Kniewald, PhD, greeted the manifestation and expressed wishes of the Academy President of further and even closer cooperation for the benefit of young scientists and global as well as the Croatian economy.
