Energy Day in Croatia

A UNIQUE ENERGY AND CLIMATE POLICY IN OPEN ENERGY MARKET
A Year After COP21

Croatian Energy Association held its 25th Energy Forum – Energy Day in Croatia on November 18th, with the subject: „A UNIQUE ENERGY AND CLIMATE POLICY IN OPEN ENERGY MARKET A Year After COP21

CEA has been holding forums for twenty five years with various subjects important for the energy sector. Papers and presentations allow introduction to problems, trends and experiences from other countries to the experts and the public. This year, twenty three energy experts from around the world held their presentations. An opinion on the state of energy sector was given by representatives from Germany, Ukraine, France, The Netherlands, Great Britain and Croatia, which has achieved significance for the Forum among other international energy gatherings.

The achieved international agreement for climate preservation United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change – COP 21 has elevated the level of international community’s responsibility for implementing measures for climate preservation and decreasing CO2 emissions.

The policy of reducing CO2 emissions implies a new approach towards energy management, i.e. creating a unique energy and climate policy for every country, for all European Union members, as well as for the European Union as a whole.

The previous concept of stimulating renewable energy sources through removing market and price risks, most commonly feed-in tariffs and an obligation for a purchase of the energy that was produced, has ensured the production placement, affordable price and the return of the invested capital in a period from four to ten years, depending on the technology. It has also contributed to a rapid technological development of renewable energy sources and to the construction of new power plants.
On the other hand, the privileged position of renewables and their secured production prices, along with a system of emission trading that did not contribute to a real objectification of the costs for reducing emissions or to the price of implementing the policy for CO2 reductions, have resulted in an increase in electricity prices for the buyers, decreased production in gas power plants or their decommission and with a temporary increase of production in coal power plants.

A unique energy and climate policy should remove all shortcomings from the previous period, and tightly connect the cost of CO2 emissions, measures and technological development and base everything on an open energy market, without administrative influence and without a privileged position for any producer, technology or measure.

Attendees were greeted by the President of Croatian Energy Association, Goran Granić Ph.D., Ante Čikotić (State secretary for energy), prof. Vladimir Andročec, Ph. D. (President of the Croatian Academy of Engineering) and Nikica Valentić (Envoy of the President of the Republic of Croatia).

Goran Granić, Ph.D., President of Croatian Energy Association, reminded the participants that Croatian Energy Association began its work in the spring of 1992 and due to the understanding of World Energy Council, soon became its member. With the desire for the Forum constructiveness and success, Goran Granić, Ph. D. used this opportunity to thank the sponsors for making this Forum possible.

This manifestation was sponsored by the President of the Republic of Croatia Kolinda Grabar – Kitarović, The Ministry of Science and Education, The Ministry of Economy, Croatian Academy of Engineering and Croatian Chamber of Economy.
